OUR STORY

The History of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA

Since 1993 the Alleghany Highlands YMCA has served as a non-profit organization committed to providing youth and family programming, unique membership services, and early learning child care by putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Opening in 1993, the YMCA operated in the Boys Home.  The YMCA eventually out-grew the Boys Home facility and through the support of the Alleghany Foundation, local businesses, and supporters of the Y, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA opened its first full facility in December 2007, which included a wellness center complete with cardiovascular machines, strength training equipment and a free weight section, a walking track, full court gym and full size indoor swimming pool.

The Y Today

The YMCA of the Alleghany Highlands is a charitable organization dedicated to making our community a healthier place to live.  Since opening our doors in 1993, our focus has remained the same: to connect people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gap in community needs. Over the years, our programs and facilities have changed, but not our mission of service to the community.

Today the Alleghany Highlands YMCA serves the greater highlands and surrounding areas through our main facility and two Early Learning Centers.

Our Youth Development programming supports families and youth through a variety of character-building programs including Y After School, Summer Day Camp, Summer Adventure Camps, Infant and Early Child Care, Preschool Early Learning, Homeschool Connect, Youth Sports, Swim Team, and Swim Lessons.

The Y’s membership services provide access to contemporary group exercise classes, cardio and strength equipment, aquatics center, full size gym with pickleball courts, and an outdoor sensory and wildlife trail – all focused to provide Healthy Living options and programming to the community.

The Y’s commitment to Social Responsibility is best demonstrated through its recent response to the 2020 pandemic and the variety of community initiatives it implemented, including Red Cross Blood Drives, Farmers to Families Food Distribution, Volunteering, Emergency Childcare for Essential Workers, Financial Aid, and numerous collaborations with like-minded community partners to help overcome the financial, social, and economic disparities brought about by the crisis.
